To the Yale SOM Class of 2021,

I am honored to offer my congratulations to the Class of 2021 as you prepare to graduate from the Yale School of Management. You have much to celebrate – your hard work and sacrifice has led you to this important day.

I also want to recognize the unique challenges your class has faced. A global pandemic forced you to find new ways to study, develop new friendships and share experiences remotely, with masks and socially distant.

But if these trying times have taught us anything – it is the need for good leaders in all areas but particularly in health care, government, and non-profits. We have learned the importance of leaders who are resilient, empathetic, creative, and dedicated and the difference someone can make in the lives of others.

You now join the ranks of SOM graduates who have made important contributions across our nation. In Connecticut, graduates have used their talents and skills learned at SOM to respond to our public health emergency. Graduates have developed the roll out of vaccines, worked to keep schools open and close the digital divide and helped address equity and opportunity gaps. We realize the need for volunteers today more than ever.

As you leave SOM, I hope you take with you the lessons you have learned during your time together to make a difference wherever you may go. I’m proud to call you fellow alum.
